Considerata la più grande cantante d'America, veniva fuori da cinque anni di successi in cinema alla hit parade quando lei e il suo produttore, Jerry Wexler della Atlantic Records, decisero che il prossimo album la avrebbe riportata alla musica della sua gioventù, al mondo del gospel americano. Le registrazioni si tennero nella chiesa del reverendo James Cleveland e durante i giorni del 13 e del 14 gennaio 1972 il regista Sydney Pollack ne riprese le sessioni.
