Abandoning the plantation where they work, Hermansia and Tiquitaque, a couple of musicians, settle in Saint-Pierre, but quickly become disillusioned as their career takes off in a small town which is only interested in Western music. Thus begins a long drift during which the couple learns new sounds and new music from elsewhere.
