As befits this convention, there are cynical gangsters robbing gold and a tired hero - a tough cop. Here we have an armed robbery, an apparent friendship and a brutal betrayal, a car chase through the crowded streets of a big city and a shootout in the finale without a happy ending. The whole thing feels like a story straight out of a Chandler novel.
