Bean si reca quindi a Los Angeles dove è ospite di David Langley, responsabile artistico di un museo che ha appena acquistato per cinquanta milioni di dollari il celebre ritratto di James Abbott McNeill Whistler intitolato La madre: esso è il più importante dipinto statunitense e per l'occasione le autorità statunitensi hanno convocato il "dottor Bean" per tenere un importante discorso alla presentazione del quadro.
